ASP, District 356: Important Update

ASP, District 356: Important Update

May 24, 2016 at 7:00 PM
On May 20, 2016, the United Security Education & General Workers applied to the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to have Unifor replaced as the bargaining agent for ASP Security. This is one of a few so-called unions circling around our membership, trying to confuse members into making a decision that will greatly affect their livelihood without giving them all the facts.

The United Security Education & General Workers tried — and failed — to replace the then CAW in 2012. But back then they were the United Sports and Entertainment Workers, made up of a few ex-Teamster Local 847 members. You voted them out once, and now they are trying to get you back.

So what has changed? Only the name. They have no respect for ASP members as proven by the contract they negotiated in secret in 2010.

Unifor has worked hard over the last four years to get to a place where we can negotiate gains for our members. Solidarity is a big factor in our success. We are about to begin bargaining a new collective agreement with ASP. This is the perfect chance to strengthen the current agreement. ASP has seen expansion and change recently with plans for more growth in the works. ASP’s success is our success, and we will work towards an agreement that reflects those achievements.

The United Security Education & General Workers don’t have that solid foundation in place. A lot is at stake. They want you to trust that they have your best interests in mind when they bargain, but who do they represent?

Unifor represents more than 320,000 members across Canada. Unifor 2002 has a proven track record, representing 11,000 airport workers from coast to coast to coast. The 35 bargaining units within our local receive the best services from the National Union, including legal, human rights, education, mobilization, research and more.

The bargaining surveys and proposal meetings we are planning allow you to have your voice heard. We do not negotiate in secret. You have elected your bargaining committee, and they are committed to representing your interests at the bargaining table. We will continue to keep you informed, so that you can make an informed choice.

Unifor Local 2002 is proud to represent you; and we are committed to representing our members at ASP as we move forward to negotiate a new collective agreement.
