ASP causing chaos for membership

ASP causing chaos for membership

September 7, 2012 at 4:35 PM
In a deliberate attempt to undermine and confuse the membership of ASP, manager Keith Fralic sent out a memo on dated September 6, 2012 entitled "Policy Bulletin.”  The "policy” changes everyone’s seniority, establishes new schedules and was done without any consultation or agreement with the CAW.

The decision to implement these new policies is arbitrary and being done in bad faith by the company.
It is a substantial change to current working conditions and a clear violation of the collective agreement.

ASP does not care! They are acting as if they are above the law and are not obliged to follow any previous agreement or letters of understandings that they agreed to in the past.

Shame on them!

With a goal to achieve a new collective agreement, the CAW first filed notice to bargain in early 2011. ASP has never sincerely committed to that process. They have made it clear that they would prefer to have no union and that they know what is best for the security guards at Pearson airport. They have openly stated that they had an agreement in place till December 31, 2012 with their friends the Teamsters and therefore had no obligation to bargain a new agreement. However, they were willing to open the agreement if the membership would accept a number of concessions.

The current agreement expires in four months and on September 5, 2012 we filed another notice to bargain. To date there has been no response but ASP will not be able to hide from bargaining this time as they will be legally forced to bargain with us by the government.

The CAW is preparing an "Unfair Labour Practice” complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board and seeking that a hearing be held expeditiously. The union may also hold strike vote meetings, as this seems to be the only type of action that the management of ASP understands.

The CAW has a good working relationship with the GTAA and we will make sure that the GTAA is aware of how disrespectful ASP is to its employees and how they have managed to create a poisoned workplace environment.

This type of bullying will not be tolerated and we will collectively take a stand against this type of workplace intimidation.

We will continue to keep the membership informed of any further developments.
