Canadian North: 99% Strike Mandate

Canadian North: 99% Strike Mandate

August 26, 2013 at 5:30 PM

To: ALL CAW MEMBERS OF CANADIAN NORTH

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

From August 18-24, your bargaining committee conducted strike meetings in Edmonton, Yellowknife, Norman Wells, Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit.

During our membership meetings, your committee gave a report on the status of bargaining with Canadian North. At every membership meeting members were outraged at Canadian North’s unreasonable concessions on Northern Living Allowance and on the elimination of your anniversary date for vacation accrual, as well as Canadian North’s unreasonable position concerning wages and premiums for Leads and Ops in both Hub and Non Hub bases.

During our presentations members spoke loud and clear reminding the bargaining committee that this is not 2009, at a time when Canadian North was in trouble and asking for the members support and sacrifice to build market share and stabilize Canadian North’s position in the aerospace industry. Members reminded us of the hard work that you the members and employees of Canadian North, have contributed to this company’s resounding turnaround. That now, is not the time for concessions, now is the time for Canadian North to recognize its CSA’s and Cargo employees and reward them for their hard work and dedication.

As a result of these meetings - and in preparation of a possible dispute - the Local will be forming strike committees in all bases; you will be contacted as we move forward to prepare.

Your Bargaining Committee has been bolstered by the show of support with a 99% strike mandate and they would like to thank everyone for coming out to vote. We meet to bargain with Canadian North on September 10 and 11in Edmonton Alberta, and we remain hopeful that with your mandate and the assistance of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, that this will provide the momentum to reach a reasonable collective agreement.

We will report back on the progress of this process.

In the event anyone has any questions about this or negotiations please don’t hesitate to call the undersigned.

On behalf of your Negotiation Committee,
Aida Kirameddine
