Their role in Employee Support, Coaching and Discipline

As you are aware, at most First Air locations management no longer performs a number of operational and administrative duties. Those tasks are now done by Cargo, Customer Service or Station Coordinators. Coordinators have a responsibility to ensure the operation runs smoothly and provide a positive environment for their peers.

The CAW Collective Agreement speaks to the responsibilities of Coordinators. Cargo, Customer Service and Station Coordinators all have similar leadership roles which are defined in Article 4.05 of the Agreement. As well as remaining a full working member in their unit, Coordinators are responsible to:

  • provide leadership to their group of employees;
  • supply on the job training and instruction that supports and directs Agents in areas of technical expertise, customer service and operational demands;
  • perform administrative duties such giving input into employee scheduling and the day to day assignment of duties;
  • ensure agents adhere to company policies and procedures, and report deviations from polices to management.

Even though coordinators lead and direct the work of their peers they are still full working members of the Agent group. At times, Coordinators may speak to other CAW members about aspects of their work with a view to improving performance in the future. When Coordinators coach others it should be done informally: it must be positive, respectful, and focused on providing the supports an Agent needs to be successful in their function. If problems persist, Coordinators should ask the union for assistance knowing they will receive help to correct all bona fide performance issues. If inappropriate behaviour does not change, Coordinators are contractually required to report breaches of company policies to management. Under no circumstances should a Coordinator be directly involved in the formal discipline of another CAW member. Progressive discipline is solely the responsibility of management.

Copies of the Collective Agreement describing the role of Coordinators (Article 4.05) can be found on the CAW’s webpage at www.caw2002tca.ca. Follow the links to Collective Agreements and a copy of the First Air agreement can be downloaded in Adobe (PDF) format.
