GTAA: Layoffs and Business Transformation

GTAA: Layoffs and Business Transformation

August 9, 2010 at 11:15 AM

Dear Members:

Your District 333 Bargaining Committee would like to take this opportunity to provide you an update on the GTAA’s Business Transformation project and layoffs.

In early 2010 the GTAA first invited the Bargaining Committee to participate in the Business Transformation process. This was precipitated by the GTAA’s announcement that approximately 115 CAW bargaining unit members would be leaving due to lay-offs. The Bargaining Committee was then engaged in twice a week meetings with the GTAA’s human resources department and senior management representatives. The Bargaining Committee’s role in these meetings was to question the rationale behind the decisions being made and to ensure the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was followed. Through the CAW's role as the “voice of reason” the Bargaining Committee was able to significantly mitigate the affect of this project on the members. Specifically, the number of members impacted has been reduced by more than 80%, down to less than 15 from the original 115.

The members that are going to be affected by the layoffs and who will exercise their option to displace will meet in the next month to discuss potential positions for displacement. Consequently, the 60-day notice is anticipated to be given to the displaced members in September.

Your Bargaining Committee will continue to be involved in the next step of the Business Transformation, deemed the implementation phase. Rest assured that we will continue to protect your rights under the CBA and convey the membership’s perspective to these discussions.

Another positive that arose from these meetings is the improvement regarding the relationship between the Bargaining Committee and GTAA management. Working in a more collaborative style has opened the lines of communication and helped to evolve a relationship of mutual respect, if not one of concurrence.

Many details of the Business Transformation and the affect on the members have yet to be finalized and are still being discussed between your Bargaining Committee and the GTAA. The intent of these discussions is to define a clear, concise process that is in alignment with the CBA.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments about this process or any other issues please contact a member of your Bargaining Committee, or call the union office:
