GTAA: Unifor local 2002 avoids layoffs

As local 2002 members at District 333 are probably aware of, the GTAA (i.e. the employer) is completing a review of their employee structure which will result in a pending reorganization. As a result of this pending reorganization, Unifor was able to protect the current membership and avoid significant layoffs.

Highlights of the agreement are as follows:

  1. In the Airfield Maintenance Facility the Labourers, Supervisors and the Airfield Maintenance Specialists (AMS) are being moved into a new merged position. The Labourers will be bumped up to Band 5. One hundred percent (100%) of the Labourers’ work will be combined into the new AMS position. As result, incumbent rights will be used and based on employee status (Seasonal vs. Full Time) will be slotted accordingly in September during this transition. In addition, the employer has advised they will pay for all the required training with no out-of-pocket expenses for the employees. Should a member be unable to obtain specific requirements (medical, D/A, CZ license) the employer and the union will deal with that employee on a case-by-case basis through accommodation.

  2. In Customer Terminal Services the Tenant Airline Representatives and Hub Connection Coordinators will be appointed into the new TSR role. There will be a requirement for additional staffing in this new role which will be opened up to the Guest Service Representatives who will have the opportunity through an Expression of Interest and testing as outlined in the Collective Agreement.

  3. In Customer Terminal Services the remaining Guest Service Representatives will remain status quo.

Through talks with the company, the Union’s primary task was to ensure that it mitigated and resolved any adverse effects the pending reorganization would have on the membership. This outcome - as outlined above - is the best solution available to ensure no layoffs would be encountered to the current District 333 membership.

In addition, any new job description/band level which negatively affects a group will be ‘green circled’ meaning they will continue to receive their normal hourly increases as if there were no changes.
