CIRB declares Unifor as bargaining agent for JTS

CIRB declares Unifor as bargaining agent for JTS

It's official! We here at Jazz Technical Services – JTS – have our own bargaining unit.

The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) declared on February 14, 2017 that a partial sale of business occurred (within the definition of the Canadian Labour Code) and JTS - a division of Jazz Aviation LP - is the successor employer with respect to heavy maintenance operations. Under this division, Unifor is the certified bargaining agent.

The bargaining unit comprises; all licensed technical skilled trades and apprentice employees; all unlicensed technical trades and apprentice employees and technical support employees at JTS. This excludes supervisors and those persons in positions above the supervisory role. A full list of exclusions is contained in the CIRB order which is attached to this document. Jazz Aviation LP will continue to be the bargaining unit for our Tech brothers who carry out Line Maintenance for Jazz.

With this CIRB order and our new JTS bargaining unit, the final item of the February 2016 Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) you ratified has been completed. We can now look forward to JTS printing our collective agreement in booklet form in the coming weeks. This has been a long arduous process; one which saw our members accept change to protect our heavy maintenance scope work. Further, we have seen growth here at JTS since we ratified this new agreement. The company has hired approximately 67 new Technical Services employees and additional hires are expected in the near future. We have seen additional non Air Canada third-party work at JTS. There has been an increase from 3 lines of heavy maintenance to the equivalent of 4 lines while we carry out modifications to the fleet. The plan is to increase to the equivalent of 5 lines of heavy maintenance this year.

You all have played an important part in this growth of this company with the exceptional work you do each and every day, so give yourself a pat on the back and let’s keep up the good work.

In solidarity,

Tim Way
