Jazz Crew Scheduling Bargaining Update

Jazz Crew Scheduling Bargaining Update

June 24, 2016 at 5:00 PM

On May 31st, Unifor and Jazz opened bargaining discussions in Halifax to exchange non-monetary proposals and formally begin talks. The parties resumed bargaining discussions during the month of June to discuss more comprehensive bargaining items.

At the end of day on Wednesday, June 22nd, the union and company were unable to reach a tentative agreement. At this time additional dates have not been scheduled to resume negotiations. Jazz Crew Schedulers have sacrificed in the past in order to ensure the viability of Jazz as a regional carrier for Air Canada. Unifor members at Crew Scheduling must be recognized for their efforts, especially at a time when Jazz has been successful. Unifor is not interested in making concessions during this round of negotiations.

Discussions have stalled over labour cost proposals that the company has introduced. These proposals would greatly change how our members are paid and impact their quality of life.

"Jazz Crew Schedulers are an integral component in the company's overall operation," said Cheryl Robinson, President of Unifor Local 2002. "I am optimistic that Jazz management has the foresight to recognize the important contribution these members make in keeping the carrier operational. Jazz prides itself on its safe, on-time and customer-friendly flight experience. Eroding its employee’s wages and quality of life does not reflect its corporate vision and values. We all believe this company can do better."

The company's overall compensation package falls short in comparison to other Unifor bargaining agreements. It is no secret that Jazz management is seeking a long-term agreement and if any discussions are to continue, it will require that concessions come off the table. Unifor has been clear that our members are doing more work with fewer people and they will not agree to an inferior collective agreement.

Members are employed across the country performing all work done on the ground for the airline, including customer service, ramp, cargo, cabin services and maintenance.
