Bargaining update for Unifor members at Jervis B. Webb, Toronto

Bargaining update for Unifor members at Jervis B. Webb, Toronto

May 11, 2016 at 2:40 PM

Late last year, your elected bargaining committee began the process of developing bargaining surveys for Unifor members at Jervis B. Webb in Toronto. The data collected from these surveys would help create the bargaining agenda for the next round of talks between the company and union.

In January, Unifor held two proposal meetings where the committee and membership reviewed the data collected from these surveys. The data yielded the members’ top 10 issues and concerns which would ultimately shape the current bargaining strategy.

Unifor met with the employer March 1, 2016 to formally open bargaining where both parties exchanged non-monetary proposals. The company is represented by their lawyer, two local managers and a Human Resources Representative. We subsequently met on March 7, 21, 22, 23 and May 9 and 10; a total of 7 days.

Although we have spent a number of days together working through the non-monetary proposals, progress has been limited and the parties have yet to exchange any monetary items with each other. The bargaining process is taking more time than expected. However, the committee is steadfast to ensure they improve on those issues the membership brought forward in the bargaining surveys.

Additional meeting dates have been agreed to for June 2, 3, July 28, and August 4 and 5. We will continue to keep you updated as we work through the process.

The previous collective agreement expired on March 31, 2016, however, the current terms and conditions continue to remain in full force and effect.

Unifor local 2002 represents 70 members at Jervis B. Webb Airport Services who are responsible for the operations and maintenance of the baggage belt systems in terminal one at Toronto’s Pearson airport; Canada’s largest and busiest airport.
