WEBB joint planning committee formed to assist employees

January 20, 2012 at 5:44 PM

The Webb contract to perform the operation and maintenance services for the GTAA at Toronto Airport expires at the end of April 2012. After months of anxious speculation, it was revealed that the new contract has been awarded to Cofely.  As Webb Canada does not have another contract in Canada, their employees at the airport have received notices of termination.

It would be an understatement to say that these are challenging times for the employees of WEBB. However, it is important that everyone involved work through these difficulties by sharing information and providing support to one another.  On January 20, 2012 the company and the union met to establish a Joint Planning Committee.  As per the Canada Labour Code  (Part III, section 211: Group Termination of Employment), the purpose of the committee is to "Minimize the impact of the termination of employment on the redundant employees and to assist those employees in obtaining other employment.”

Members of the Joint Planning Committee must represent all relevant parties; employees, union, non-union administration and management personal.  The committee will consist of Ashley Watkins, Chuck Doyle and Mike Dyl, who will represent unionized employees, Harry Bagh who represents administration/non-unionized employees and for the employer:  Moe Kanan, Rob Meijer, Joe Lekram  and Kristi Stuetzer.  The co-chairpersons for the committee are Chuck Doyle and Kristi Stuetzer who will consult with the other members of the Joint Planning Committee to determine future meeting dates and agendas.

Cofely has advised WEBB that they are currently looking to fill the following positions for the operation and maintenance of the Terminal 1 bag room:

• Administrative Assistant
• H.R. Coordinator
• Trainer
• Operation Manager
• Reliability Manager
• Operation Supervisor

• Automation Technician / Electrician
• Tech II Mechanical
• Tech I Mechanical
• Jammer/MCS agent
• Operation/Energy efficiency eng.
• Control Room Operator
• Planner
• Parts Clerk

The job descriptions will be discussed during the interviews which are scheduled to take place on January 26, 27 and 31 and on February 1, 2012. Additional dates will be added if required.  Cofely has committed to consider any interested applicants, who are advised to call Cheryl Fournier at 1-877-455-8780 to schedule an interview.

We understand that there may be many question that employees may have as a result of this unfortunate situation;  RRSPs, benefits, termination pay, assistance in future opportunities in employment and education.  The committee is currently working on a joint Q and A which will be completed late next week. The CAW is committed to provide any and all resources to effected employees, including coordinating the involvement of HRSDC where appropriate.

If any member has additional questions or concerns please contact CAW representatives Chuck Doyle at [email protected]  or Mike Dyl at [email protected].  Issues pertaining to wind-down of WEBB Canada and employee transitions may happen quickly and it is our goal to supply you with timely updates; please ensure that Chuck or Mike has your current email address.

We will continue to keep you informed of any pertinent issues as they arise.

In Solidarity,

WEBB/CAW Planning Committee:
