Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Thanksgiving is a holiday that brings us all together. It’s also a time to remind us to count our blessings and give thanks for the many people and experiences that enrich our lives. Last week, in Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador solidarity was front and centre as we stood on the picket line side by side to support our sisters and brothers from D-J Composites Local 597.

These members have been on the picket line for 92 weeks, the longest lockout in the province’s history. I’m proud that our National union and union members came from across Canada to support and raise awareness that this lockout was unjust and that 92 weeks is unacceptable for any worker to be on a picket line.

The members of Local 597 reminds us that together and with our collective action we can fight for stronger labour laws that protect all workers in Canada.  As a result of our solidarity rally in Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador, on October 3rd, 2018, D-J Composites consented to binding arbitration, which will eventually lead to a collective agreement and end the lockout.

Canadian Council – Halifax, Nova Scotia August 17-19,2018

He also added that he was incredibly proud of the achievements made in advancing the labour movement, and since its inception in 2013, Unifor has been a leading advocate for workers rights, a fair NAFTA deal and stronger social programs including better health care.
