Orange Shirt Day: A Day of Recognition and Reflection

On Sunday, September 30th, Unifor Local 2002 will join with Canadians from coast to coast to coast recognizing Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters. Orange shirt day is an event that began in 2013 and originated in Williams Lake, BC. This is a day to remember the appalling treatment of more than 150,000 First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children, who were taken from their families and forced into residential schools and were made to integrate into white culture.

September 30th is a day to show respect for the residential school survivors and their families. In the spirit of reconciliation with Canada’s First Nations, let us all stand together as one community in commemoration and hope for the generations of children to come, with the message that “Every Child Matters”.

We encourage all our sisters and brothers to wear the color orange and participate in the collective act of reconciliation.  To learn more about the legacy of Residential Schools, please visit www.orangeshirtday.org.
