Ornge District 344: Bargaining Survey of Work Schedules

Ornge District 344: Bargaining Survey of Work Schedules

November 7, 2017 at 4:15 PM

As directed in the interest award of Arbitrator Tom Hodges on October 31, 2017, Unifor and the Company are required to meet in order to finalize the Letter of Understanding (LOU) within 30 days of the issuance of the award date. A significant part of the Letter of Understanding (LOU) is Article 26 – Hours of Work and Overtime, items 6 & 7 (on page 20) of the award, which pertains to the Union presenting new work schedules.

As per the award, agreement to implement new hours of work, overtime language, schedules or patterns will take effect on January 1st, 2018.

In order to give the Bargaining Committee a clear understanding of membership priorities, a survey has been created, which we encourage all members to complete. The survey is now open to the members and the closing date for members to complete the online survey is Monday, November 13th at 17:00 CST. Please see the link below to begin the survey.

Your Bargaining Committee, along with suggestions from the membership have compiled a total of 8 different work schedules for you to consider. Once the survey is complete, results are analyzed and presented to the members. All information collected will be treated as strictly confidential by your Bargaining Committee.

Survey Instructions

Members are asked to list the work schedules in priority sequence. There is a total of 8 different work schedules for you to consider. In the survey you will be asked:

  1. What base do you work at (floats will vote at their "primary" base where they work most shifts)?

  2. Please rank your scheduled choices from #1 (your first choice) to #8 (your last choice).

  3. You will be asked to answer Yes / No to the following question: Would you like the opportunity to rotate the assigned "on call" shifts between staff who own a line spot and swing staff?

  4. Do you have any other scheduling related topics that you would like to address during this process?

The Bargaining Committee has scheduled meetings with Unifor on November 15 & 16, 2017. We will be meeting with Ornge Labour Management Committee (LMC) on November 17, 2017, where we will be tabling the work schedule issue.

We will continue to provide updates via the Unifor 2002 website and e-news bulletins. Please ensure you have subscribed to Unifor 2002 e-news.

In solidarity,

Ornge Bargaining Committee members:
Mark Etherington, Chairperson
Geoffrey Brown, Southern Bargaining Committee Representative
Dan Lefebvre, Northern Bargaining Committee Representative
Kelly-Anne Orr, Ornge National Representative
