Ornge threatens workplace changes just ahead of bargaining talks

October 31, 2015 at 2:15 PM

In a move that union officials see as callous and unjust, Unifor has been advised that Ornge plans to implement harsh workplace changes for its paramedics that will negatively impact employee well-being. These changes come only days before Unifor and Ornge were set to begin bargaining talks.

Many Ornge paramedics have expressed frustration with their employer’s indifference of creating a workplace that does not recognize employee’s health and safety. Some have also have voiced concerns that management lacks recognition that the work they perform is demanding and requires appropriate rest periods. This job requires that paramedics be alert and ready to take action at any time. Making these workplace changes shows a lack of respect to the employees.

That said, the bargaining committee is looking at all options to address these workplace changes which include utilizing the grievance procedure, filing for conciliation with the Provincial Labour Board, and possibly withdrawing voluntary services (eg. Training and overtime). The committee will continue to discuss next steps. Should you have any questions please contact members of the bargaining committee. Please stay informed and stay united.

"Unifor members at Ornge are highly trained individuals with exceptional life-saving skills," said Unifor 2002 President Cheryl Robinson. "The company’s mission to provide outstanding care to its patients is something that all Ornge paramedics take very seriously, therefore we feel that we have no choice but to explore all options available to us."

Unifor represents more than 200 members at Ornge across the province. These members are responsible for patient care and medical transfers. The operation is the largest and most sophisticated program of aero-medical transport in North America. It currently serves the 12.5 million residents of the province of Ontario.

Local 2002 will continue to keep you informed with any further developments. Please ensure that you have subscribed to Unifor 2002's e-news service at www.unifor2002.org.
