TORONTO - "There certainly are major issues with staff morale at ORNGE," said Unifor Local 2002 President Euila Leonard. "The morale issues are deeply rooted in fatigue, stress chronic under-staffing and in particular shift over-runs."

Unifor said that in a recent one week period there were four shift over-runs that saw paramedics work shifts from 16 to 22 hours in length.

"ORNGE has the ability and responsibility to manage these things but they operate the system in a manner that pushes our members to the breaking point,” said Unifor Health Care Director Andy Savela.

Unifor members just received an arbitrated settlement in their last contract. "It is interesting to see ORNGE comment that this contract would be a benefit to labour relations," Savela said.

"Frankly they have demonstrated that they will willingly violate the collective agreement when it suits their needs and that cannot and will not continue to happen."
