Worldwide Flight Services announces closure of Toronto cargo operation

January 4, 2012 at 3:10 PM
Jan. 5/ Correction:  On January 3, 2012 Worldwide Flight Services announced that they were unsuccessful in retaining the American Airlines cargo service contract in Toronto.  American Airlines has awarded the contract toCAS,effective March 1, 2012.

The company will be closing Toronto Cargo Services on February 29, 2012 and putting ten members out of work. As per the Canada Labour Code, these members will be entitled to severance pay.

Over the years, these workers have seen contracts come and go as companies undercut other companies in a futile ‘race to the bottom’ always at the worker’s expense. Just last November, four ramp workers in Toronto were laid off when their positions were eliminated due to the loss of another cargo contract.

Worldwide Flight Services has operated out of Toronto since 1988 and through the years has employed over 250 unionized members.
