Air Canada: Achieving new lows

June 30, 2022 at 4:00 PM

The peak travel season is here and Unifor members are experiencing implausible working conditions from creeping flight delays, canceled and oversold bookings, irregular operations, and long lineups at customer service desks, just to name a few. Even with yesterday’s announcement from Air Canada regarding reducing the number of flights, we know that the long list of challenges will remain.

We have heard stories of members being followed into public washrooms and shouted at by frustrated customers. Members are missing much-needed rest and lunch breaks while asking for support from their local Deployment Managers and Customer Experience Managers, which often never comes. Meanwhile, Unifor members have remained professional and resilient during these tumultuous times. All of these challenges have taken a toll across the country in every location and department.

The Bargaining Committee has asked the employer that all members from Contact Centres, Customer Relations, Customer Journey, and all Airports receive double time for working overtime. So far, our demand has only partially been accepted by Air Canada management. We have also been pushing to review the hiring wages and other operational issues for months.

We have heard from many members across the country. Your calls for help are not being ignored.

We are raising concerns about the health and safety of our members to all levels of management. We know your breaks are being missed and calls for assistance are falling upon deaf ears by Air Canada. We know that flight arrivals are being missed and passengers are being let off aircraft, violating our collective agreement. Additionally, we have filed several policy grievances for scope violations.

We know you care about the customers and want to provide the best possible service with care and class. We encourage you to take the time needed to continue to provide that service. Your health and safety have and will remain a priority. We will continue to pressure Air Canada to treat all Unifor members with the same care and class they have promised to their customers.

In solidarity,

Unifor/Air Canada Bargaining Committee,
Benoit Lapointe – Chairperson, Eastern Region
Tracy Rector – Atlantic Region
Harold Bateman – Central Region
Joanne Goulet – Western Region
Soppo Gomez Gnali – Pacific Region
Tammy Moore – President, Unifor Local 2002
Frances Galambosy – Unifor National Service Representative, Airline Sector
Leslie Dias – Unifor Director, Airlines Sector
