Canadian North Customer Service: Recap of the UMHQ Meeting held on June 25th, 2019

June 27, 2019 at 2:00 PM

On Tuesday, June 25th, the Union met with the Company in Edmonton at a Union / Management meeting (UMHQ). One of the items discussed was the commitment the Company had made to bargain a new agreement with the Union. As members are fully aware, the Federal Government has recently approved the merger of First Air with Canadian North. The finalization of this merger can take several months or up to a year or more to be completed. Since the Canadian North (Customer Service) collective agreement had expired in December 2018, your Bargaining Committee had requested that we enter into bargaining in 2019. Some of the other topics of discussions at the meeting included;

  1. Out of Scope positions

  2. Scheduling

  3. Uniforms

  4. Updates STDs/LTDs/LOAs on file

  5. Pay discrepancies

Some of these items were brought forward by the members in several different work locations. The Company has committed to investigate these issues and will provide the Union with an update.

Since meeting with the Company, we are pleased to inform the membership that we are looking to secure future bargaining dates with the Company within the next few months which will be communicate to the membership. The reason for this delay is because the merger is subject to terms and conditions before it becomes finalized. We would like to inform our members that there is a lengthy process that will follow, once the merger has been settled.

We will ensure to keep the membership informed as this process unfolds. Once the merger is completed, one of the important tasks will be in the merging of the seniority lists between the Canadian North and First Air members which are both represented by Unifor Local 2002. Once that seniority list has been merged it will be posted in all of the workplaces for members to review. Should there be any questions or concerns regarding the list members will have an opportunity to bring forward their concerns.

In solidarity,
Theresa Amicarelli
Assistant to the Local 2002 President
