Canadian North: UMHQ update and bargaining news

Canadian North: UMHQ update and bargaining news

July 28, 2015 at 4:00 PM

As you are aware the union and the company meet quarterly through the year at Union/Management meetings (UMHQ) to address issues that impact all of our members.

Members have brought forward number of concerns to Unifor representatives. Some of these concerns pertain to pay discrepancies, lack of pay, uniforms and other ongoing work-related issues.

As a result, the union has brought these concerns forward at UMHQ meetings. For some unresolved issues, Unifor was forced to file grievances in order to have Canadian North address the concerns.

Over the past year we have addressed the following issues:

  • Greater earnings payout [per Article 13.02 (a)]

  • Northern living allowance (NLA) [per Letter of Understanding #4 (LOU#4)]

  • Dry cleaning allowance [per Article 18.13 (g) and (h)]

  • Uniforms

Following our successful grievance hearing, Unifor 2002 members who were named in both the NLA and the Dry cleaning allowance have been made whole and have received what is owed to them. In addition to those who were named in both above said grievances, Canadian North will be performing an audit on both of these items to determine if other members need to be made whole.

On July 22, 2015 full-time employees should have received a payout for the 2014 greater earnings. The Union is still working diligently regarding the 2013 greater earnings pay out. Unifor will continue to work with the company in order to settle the remaining issues that need to be corrected and or paid out.

Going forward the union recommends that you keep copies of your time cards, and your paystubs. Should you identify any potential issues, please approach your local manager/supervisor first to correct them. If the issues remain unresolved please contact your district chairperson.

With respect to uniforms, Canadian North has advised Unifor to instruct members who have uniform concerns to approach their manager/supervisor with such concerns. Should these concerns not be dealt with in a timely manner, please contact your district chairperson.

We would like to remind all members that we will be preparing to enter into negotiations with Canadian North in the fall of 2015. In order to keep you informed of the negotiations process, we ask you to provide a personal email address to any of the contacts listed below.
