Canadian North ratifies new agreement

CAW members at Canadian North have ratified their collective agreement by 84%. The new Collective Agreement is in effect from January 1, 2010 until December 31, 2012.

  

Contract highlights include:
  

  • Wage Increases (Article 5)
      ?   Jan 01, 2010 – 0%
      ?   Jan 01, 2011 – 2.0%
      ?   Jan 01, 2012 – 2.5%
      

  • PEP – Productivity Efficiency Program (same as received by the Flight Attendant’s)
      

  • Communications in writing to the Union for the following: shift alternations of fourteen days or greater, lay-offs and recalls, leaves of absences, transfers, change of status, promotions demotions, terminations, additionally all correspondence under Article 14 and Article 15 shall be copied to the Union District Chairperson.
      

  • Improvements to the Company Benefits – increased from once a year to once each quarter during the first month of every month.
      

  • Paid time off for the District Chairperson (one day @ month)
      

  • Improved language regarding Discipline and Discharge -- Article 15. The Company will offer an Employee the right to have the presence of a duly accredited representative(s) of the Union.
      

  • Non-Hub Base Ops premium $.25 @ hour
      

  • The northern allowance guarantee has been renewed.
      

  • Location added to the definitions – means a work location(s) within a Base, examples of work locations are Airport and Cargo. Edmonton, Yellowknife and Iqaluit are considered to have separate work locations. All other base will be considered as one Location/Base.
      

  • Improvements to Article 11 – staff reductions
      

  • Contracting Out Language – with a severance penalty
      

  • Orientation time for New Hires
      

  • Protection for laid-off employees from losing their recall rights (Article 11.10a) should they be working as a Casual and be unable to report for assignments they will only be deemed to have resigned from there Casual status (Article 21).
