Peel Regional Police are investigating a possible hate crime that was reported over the weekend at Terminal 3 of Toronto Pearson International Airport. The incident occurred at a publicly accessible Muslim prayer space and was vandalized. However, details are being withheld as the investigation is ongoing.

The Greater Toronto Airports Authority has confirmed that the vandalized area was at the Aviation Interfaith Ministry in Terminal 3.

"This deplorable act goes against all the shared values that Unifor stands for," said Don Ross, Unifor Local 2002 Interim President. "Our membership is diverse making us a better, stronger and more connected union. On behalf of the entire Unifor 2002 Executive Board, we condemn this incident and will assist Toronto Pearson International Airport representatives and Peel Regional Police."

Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Toronto's Pearson International Airport remains a primary hub for passenger and cargo operations, making it one of the busiest airports in Canada.

"We believe the values of equality, justice, safety, dignity and fairness should extend from the workplace to our communities, places of worship and into our homes," said Cate Moss, Unifor Local 2002 Human Rights Coordinator. "Unifor respects all religious beliefs and will always stand against hate and oppression."

Peel Regional Police are asking anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact investigators with the Airport Criminal Investigative Bureau at:

(905) 453-3311 x3133 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477)
