Porter Ramp: Important Information for members at District 361

May 18, 2022 at 11:30 AM

Porter Airlines recently approached Unifor seeking an agreement to increase the base wage for those employees in service years 1-7. Under this agreement, the parties agree to increase the base pay for these employees to $18.50/hour effective May 21, 2022.

Although we are currently in contract negotiations, and have secured dates to meet with the employer on June 2-3, 2022, this agreement was achieved outside of the context of collective bargaining process.

Attached is the signed Letter of Agreement (LOA), which includes provisions to ensure that Unifor’s rights (inclusively) will be maintained, and that this agreement is non-prejudicial in nature. Unifor maintains full rights to negotiate wage increases for all employees during the current round of collective bargaining with Porter Airlines.

Porter, like many employers across Canada, have experienced challenges both in the recruiting and retaining of employees, since returning from the COVID-19 shutdown; specifically in this case, pertaining to the below-the-wing work group at Billy Bishop Airport.

These challenges need to be addressed immediately in order to support our membership in the work they perform each and every day. Unifor Local 2002 is hopeful that this agreement will assist Porter Airlines in their current staffing efforts, which in turn will improve the support to our hard-working ramp members.

Make no mistake, your Unifor bargaining committee will continue to push for an increase of wages for ALL members of this important group. While a majority of members will see an immediate increase to their base wages, it is important to remember that negotiations continue and we have an opportunity to continue to negotiate for additional improvements and gains for the entirety of this bargaining unit.
