Asian Heritage Month

I hope you are all well and safe. The month of May is South Asian & Asian Heritage Month.

Asian culture is colorful, fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse. This month is a time to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent and honour those traditions that have been passed on from generation to generation – traditions that shape the history and lives of all of our Asian brothers & sisters.

The theme for this year’s Asian Heritage Month is "Recognition, Resilience, and Resolve." It is a call for all Canadians to come together to combat all forms of anti-Asian racism and discrimination while celebrating the wonderful diversity of Asian culture and heritage.

Since this pandemic began more than a year ago, many of us have experienced fear and anxiety. This is impacting many Asians not only in Canada, but around the world. Now, more than ever before, is the time for understanding and education, where we can all stand together against xenophobia; fear and hatred fueled by misinformation resulting in racism and discrimination.

In May 2002, the Government of Canada officially declared May as Asian Heritage Month. Part of the declaration reads:

"Diversity represents one of Canada’s greatest strengths, and we strive to ensure that all Canadians have the opportunity to reach their full potential and participate in Canada’s civic life… The people of this diverse, vibrant and growing community have contributed to every aspect of life in Canada – from the arts and science to sport, business, and government…"

To combat all forms of racism, we as Canadians need to stand together. Anti-Asian slurs, comments, acts of vandalism and violence are all unacceptable and we need to stand up and speak out when it occurs. Racism is not innate; it is learned and passed on to others via misinformation, stereotypes and fear. We need to look within ourselves and accept each other’s race, language, cultural heritage, nationality, as well as our social and religious traditions.

Let's spread the love of Asian cultures. Stay strong and stay safe.
