Air Canada In-Flight Crew Scheduling flip flops on scope work

October 23, 2015 at 4:15 PM

After just one week of bargaining with Air Canada its In-Flight Crew Scheduling group, talks came to an abrupt halt after the company announced their intention to move the remaining work in the planning department from Montreal to Toronto. Despite the commitments bargained during the 2011/2012 set of negotiations to keep this work in Montreal, Air Canada has announced their intention not only move the work to Toronto, but they also plan to convert the planning and records work from unionized positions to management (i.e. non-unionized) positions. This decision will ultimately result in job loss for many of our Unifor members.

It is without question that the Unifor bargaining committee is outraged at Air Canada’s announcement. Your committee will explore all possible options and use every means necessary to ensure that this action does not proceed any further. Air Canada made a commitment during the last set of negotiations which they should uphold and respect.

It is bizarre that in times of record profits Air Canada would pick a fight with Unifor over an attempt to move and relocate work belonging to this bargaining unit. There is no logical rationale of any kind that would justify this action, other than financial greed. Your work is crucial to this company’s operations and Unifor is committed to assuring that your contributions are respected and your jobs are protected.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing more than 310,000 workers. It was formed Labour Day weekend 2013 when the Canadian Auto Workers and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers unions merged.
