After more than six months after talks broke down between the CAW and First
Air, discussions will take place on December 14th in Ottawa in front of Federal
Arbitrator Tom Hodges. Mr. Hodges has a lengthy history with
mediation/arbitration and been involved with many CAW cases including Jazz
Technical Services, , Greater Toronto Airport Authority, Fed EX (Morningstar
Air), and Ornge (Ontario Air Ambulance).
Ron Smith, CAW Director of Transportation will be assisting the bargaining
committee in hopes that a mediated solution can be reached between the two
parties. If a solution cannot be agreed upon during the December 14th date, the
arbitration will proceed in the new year.
"The CAW voluntarily agreed to the conciliation process as we were
unsuccessful in bargaining a tentative agreement that we could take to the
membership for ratification," said CAW National Representative Leslie Dias. "Our
hope is that First Air can resume productive talks on December 14th and resolve
this long-standing impasse."
The current collective agreement between the CAW and First Air expired on May
7, 2012.
We will continue to update the membership as this process unfolds.
