On January 24 the Canada Industrial Relations
Board (CIRB) ruled that a representation vote will be held for employees
affected by the earlier sale of business declaration at the GTAA. This is an
important and significant ruling for workers, and a victory for workplace
democracy!
In our detailed submission to the CIRB we argued
that working people should have the right to choose their own union. No worker
should have a union imposed on them – an act that contradicts the fundamentals
of union democracy. The CIRB agreed with the CAW, determining that a secret
ballot vote is the best way for workers to select the union they want to
represent them – without interference and without intimidation. It is
unfortunate and disappointing to hear that other groups don’t feel the same way.
The details of the vote will be released shortly
and all affected workers will be notified thereafter. We pledge to respectfully
discuss and debate your options so that you can make an informed decision prior
to voting. We will not resort to falsehoods, intimidation and misinformation (as
our record shows) but rather provide you all you need to know about the CAW.
To help facilitate this process we will be
staffing an information office located in the Convair building
starting on Tuesday February 5 at 7:00am. Here you will be able to access
any and all information to make your decision. This office is in addition to our
regular local union office. We encourage you to stop by at anytime!
