GTAA: Outstanding grievances

GTAA: Outstanding grievances

April 16, 2009 at 12:00 AM

During collective bargaining, the CAW made it their objective to resolve all outstanding CAW and PSAC grievances on file.

In order to accelerate the process, the CAW suggested that the parties agree to mediation or an expedited mediation/arbitration process to resolve all of the outstanding grievances. After a number of discussions an agreement was reached to deal with those grievances involving terminations and then those matters that are monetary in nature, using mediation.

The GTAA and CAW agreed to utilize two mediators; Mr. Tom Hodges and Mr. Hugh Secord. Present at the meetings were: for the CAW; District 333 bargaining committee members, representatives from the local, and national CAW office and, from the GTAA; their lawyer, representatives from human resources, labour relations and some department heads. On April 2, 3, 7, and 8th, the parties and mediators dealt with sixteen terminations and related grievances, resulting in a total of 23 grievances being closed.

The overwhelming majority of the grievances heard were settled by means of a Memorandum of Settlement (MOS) resulting in a cash settlement or reinstatement, or the grievance was withdrawn without prejudice and precedence.

There are numerous other grievances that need to be dealt with. The parties have agreed to continue the process with mediator Tom Hodges on April 23 and 24.

The mediation process is well underway and as progress continues, we will continue to keep you informed.
