GTAA: Welcome to the CAW

Dear Member:

I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome you to the CAW. Now that the CIRB has issued an Interim certificate certifying the CAW as the official bargaining agent, we must all participate in building a unified progressive local union. The GTAA unit, now over 900 members strong, can play a significant leadership role within our local union. There are many activists within the workplace that are a welcome addition.

As President of Local 2002, one of my primary responsibilities is to build solidarity within our union. This is accomplished through creating an environment of inclusion by respecting our different cultures. We have a tremendous opportunity to achieve our common goals by working together.

Elections are currently underway for the Local 2002 Executive Board. As a result of the interim certificate being issued and you officially becoming CAW members, you may participate by voting in these elections. The positions you will be voting for consist of the President, Financial Secretary, and Central Region Vice President. Specific details regarding dates and times of the election are being posted in your workplace.

I understand that the CAW structure is unfamiliar to many and the following description details the roles of the Executive Board. They are entrusted with the administration of the affairs of the Local Union, including responsibility of the Local Union’s funds, properties, and other assets. In addition, the Executive Board is empowered to implement the policies and procedures that are debated by and ultimately determined by the overall leadership. They oversee all of the 19 workplaces that comprise Local 2002.

Very soon writs of elections will be posted calling for nominations for additional vice chairpersons (stewards) and bargaining representatives in your workplace. A part of our building process will be to finalize the workplace representation.

Voting gives you a voice. It is your opportunity to get involved in creating the leadership that best represents you. Our vision for the future must include stability, empowerment and solidarity. We can do this together.

Be informed, get involved and become part of the process. It is your local union.

In solidarity

Leslie Dias
President, CAW Local 2002
