Message to all employees at the GTAA

Message to all employees at the GTAA

March 17, 2008 at 12:00 AM

Greetings!

We are pleased that you have taken the time to attend our open meeting. We look forward to the privilege of representing all employees of the GTAA as one unified bargaining unit.

The CAW has been very busy since we were named the bargaining unit for the employees of the GTAA. We have held a series of internal meetings in order to comply with our responsibilities as required by the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB). Immediately following the results of the vote, our legal department forwarded a letter to the GTAA requesting a meeting, as well as:

  1. A complete list of employees including both represented and non-represented personnel with their respective job title, classification and job description as of March 5th;

  2. An up to date organization chart for all of the GTAA;

  3. A print out of the last union dues check off sent to PSAC.

We have yet to receive these documents from the GTAA.

Several steps must occur before the consolidation process can move forward. The first and foremost is for the CIRB to issue a certificate of representation to the CAW. At that point, we will legally be in a position to deal with your employer as the representative for all employees at the GTAA.

In order for the certificate to be issued, the parties must agree on a bargaining unit description. In the event that a mutual agreement cannot be reached by April 30th, the CIRB will schedule a meeting with the parties in order to facilitate an agreement.

Until such time, PSAC continues to have the legal duty to represent members of Locals 0004 and 0005 on day to day issues and grievances. As well, you will follow the same collective agreement as prior to the vote.

Once the CIRB issues a certificate, we will elect a bargaining committee from Locals 0004 and 0005 while maintaining the present bargaining committee from CAW District 333. Together, they will form the committee which will deal with the integration of the 3 bargaining units and represent you on a day to day basis in the workplace.

We are currently attempting to clarify the representation structure that PSAC will have in place until the CAW certification has been issued by the Board. It is PSAC’s legal responsibility to continue to represent you until a certificate is issued by the Board. This legal responsibility is enforced by the CIRB.

If you have any concerns regarding your representation, please contact Jeff Hatt, Chairperson at (416) 776-5167.

The CAW will continue to update you as the events unfold and we are doing our best to expedite this process. If this cannot be accomplished, we will have the CIRB intervene.

We look forward to representing all GTAA employees in the near future.

In solidarity,

Leslie Dias, President Local 2002
