Air Canada Jazz has announced that they will
terminate flight operations at Comox Valley Airport due to the increase in fuel
prices and their decision to reduce capacity in the domestic market. Operations
at this location will cease as of September 2, 2008. Jazz Air operates one
flight daily from Comox to Calgary. This closure will result in the loss of six
part-time members. These members will receive layoff notices next week.
The Company has advised the Union that they will
be going to the base next week to discuss the closure with employees. Janice
Mackey, Bargaining Representative for the Pacific region will also be in
attendance to assist with any questions that may arise.
“This is causing a ripple affect, and no one
knows where the hammer will strike next, nor does anyone feel secure in their
work place as a result,” said Shirley Anderson-Mio, CAW Bargaining Chairperson
for Jazz CSA/ACS.
The CAW has not been advised of any other
closures at this time. We will keep you advised and will communicate additional
information as soon as it becomes available.
