Base Reports

  • D711 –Not much is happening in Vancouver. The company has posted an Attendance Analyst position, perhaps we should all apply for this? It seems to be a growing business as far as Jazz is concerned. We are working to get a job accommodation for one of our members. We are starting to talk about shift schedules for the September Shift bid.

  • D712 –There are a couple of members who have expressed interest in the Vice Chair vacancy in Calgary. We are still working on the heat exchanger pressure testing and cleaning process. The correct soaps have been ordered and we should be ready to go within a month. There is an ongoing policy grievance on contracting out our props and heat exchangers.

  • D713 –London management have had preliminary talks regarding possibly changing shifts to a variation of a 10 hour shift. The company has informed the union of its intent to contract out lease returns. The Bargaining Committee has grieved this and we are waiting for the full arbitration. No date has been set. All bases are waiting for the resolution to the Vacation Allotment arbitration. If this is not resolved early, we can postpone the vacation bids. Nominations are out for a permanent District Chair and a Vice Chair for London. In the mean time Ryan Boundy will be acting DC, filling in for Karen Leroux who has left Jazz to pursue other interests. When the company says that it usually means that a manager was politely asked to hit the road… in Karen’s case she really is going to do something she wants to do! We thank her for the great job she did as District Chair and we wish her all the best!

  • D714 – In Montreal, like the other bases, the CAP and AMP programs are going strong. Our members are not happy about the lease returns going to Mirabelle and are awaiting the result of the grievance. The company has been sending supervisors on the weekends and has been supplying them with our tooling! For the September shift bid the 4-55 is still popular. We are looking at keeping the current format of a straight afternoon and a straight night shift with everyone else rotating. It works out to five crews per side rotating 3 weeks of days and 2 weeks nights. We are told we will be starting 757 work during the Christmas season. It has been so hot in Montreal that the company was supplying us with popsicles to try and keep us cool.

  • D716 – Regrets

  • D715 – Halifax still has a number of outstanding grievances that they are trying to get resolved. In some instances, the company is trying to get sick notes after the fact from our members! Cap and Amp programs are still going strong and the company is still using family days in their calculations. The union’s position is that they have no right to use family days in the Cap or AMP programs. We have tried to settle this outside of arbitration, but that seems unlikely. Another issue is that people who don’t bring in sick notes are getting double dipped. They lose the sick day, plus they don’t get paid for it! As far as accommodations goes, we are not really sure that all accommodations are treated equally. Jonathan Cristo (Benefits Coordinator) only hears about the problems accommodations. We need to ensure that all accommodations are meeting the same standard system wide. This will require an increased information exchange between Jonathan and the District Chairs, who in some cases are not being informed of who needs an accommodation. Don Ross will follow up with Jonathan. On that note, everyone who goes off on a claim is suppose to be sent Jonathan Cristo’s contact info in case they do encounter problems. We have had a report that it did not happen in at least one case and we will have Jonathan follow up on that.

VP Report

  • Don Ross – Currently we have been interviewing CARs candidates and I was hoping to have it wrapped up for this call, but it will have to be announced next week. The next Local 2002 Executive Board will take place in August in Montreal. We are looking at setting the next Regional for September.
