Jazz Tech Bargaining Committee meets management to amend overtime policy

The CAW Bargaining Committee has received a number of questions regarding the Company's proposal (Overtime Commitment) on overtime. The proposal was managements attempt to satisfy the Union's concerns over possible reduction in overtime opportunities as a result of the recent order from Arbitrator Teplitsky allowing the sub contracting of more Heavy Check Aircraft. After discussions between the CAW Bargaining Committee and management the original proposal has been amended and clarified.

There will be no sign up notification of the proposed four days in the Heavy Bases of Halifax and London. The Union argued that the work already existed and therefore any requirement for advance notice to plan this work and schedule the overtime was unwarranted.

Any extra vacancies arising from the overtime requirements not being satisfied in the Heavy Bases using "In Base" overtime provisions would be offered to anyone from the Line Bases as a Special Assignment and all the provisions of the Collective Agreement shall apply.

With respect to the "Guaranteed Positions" in the line bases it is to be clearly understood that these positions are voluntary.

Any individual may sign up seven days in advance of the shift, and four days prior to the shift the employee will be contacted and asked to either accept or decline the shift. If the employee accepts the shift it will become part of the regular work schedule. If for any reason the employee cannot report for the overtime shift they must advise the Company of their absence. No sick leave or other leave will be required. However, the Company may request the employee substantiate the reason for the absence.

The Guaranteed Positions are also a means of providing extra staff in Line Bases where employees may be drafted to fill Special Assignments required by the Heavy Bases. Failure to secure these guaranteed positions may result in the Company electing not to draft employees from a particular Line Base for the Special Assignment according to the Collective Agreement. Any other overtime requirements in the Line Bases will again be as per the provisions outlined in the Collective Agreement.

Employees working overtime and departing for a Heavy Base (Halifax or London) shall be advised in writing of their expected overtime shift. The employee will be required to swipe in at the departure base (prior to leaving) as well as swipe in and out for their shift when they report for their overtime shift at the Heavy Base.

It was brought to the Unions attention that an "Overtime Policy" proposed by the Company had been distributed to CAW members in the Halifax Heavy Base. The Union had no prior knowledge of this policy and immediately met management for discussion. The policy has been rescinded.
