EMPLOYEE UPDATE

The proposed shift schedule for both Heavy Bases – London and Halifax – continues to be an ongoing issue between the Union and the Company. In a letter to the Union dated October 5, 2009, Management reiterated its position of proceeding forward with the five-on, two-off, (5X2) Monday to Friday schedule for the upcoming 2010 shift bid in both of the Heavy Bases.

In the above mentioned letter, the Company addressed several of the other concerns the Union had raised; one of which being comments made by Management that while Bargaining Unit Members (i.e. Employees) are scheduled off, Management would be utilized to perform Stores functions. This was retracted by Management and made clear that Bargaining Unit Members would be utilized as per the Collective Agreement. Secondly, the proposed “Summer Shutdown” (which would result in forced Vacation or Members being forced into Leaves of Absence without pay) was abandoned. However Management left the door open for future discussion on the topic with the understanding that whatever form this may take, Membership participation would be voluntary.

After more correspondence with Management, there has been another meeting scheduled for Tuesday October 13, 2009. This meeting will be a continued effort to convince Management that a compromise to the proposed shift schedule can be reached that will address the requirements of all parties. For the time being, all Members are encouraged to act in a manner that will not jeopardize the Union’s ability to negotiate a satisfactory solution.
