2020 Human Rights Day: Recover Better - Stand Up for Human Rights

Seventy-two years ago, on December 10th, the United Nations General Assembly adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s theme for International Human Rights Day 2020 is “Recover Better – Stand Up for Human Rights”, reminding us during this COVID 19 pandemic to focus on the need to build back better by ensuring Human Rights are central to recovery efforts.

Unifor has been a leader in the fight for rights for more than 13 years. It is something we continue to do every day. Human rights are workers’ rights, and workers’ rights are human rights – the two are inseparable.  Unifor is committed to advocating, defending, and furthering human rights for all. We make it a priority to advance rights every day, by bargaining strong language in our collective agreements and through political action. We have played a key role in decisions that ended wage discrimination, improved employment equity, and anti-discrimination laws.

On this occasion - December 10, take a stand for more humanity not less. Get active. Get Political. Step up and defend the rights of a refugee or migrant, a person with disabilities, an LGBT person, a woman, a child, indigenous peoples, a minority group, or anyone else at risk of discrimination or violence.

Let us reassert the importance of human rights in re-building the world we want, the need for global solidarity as well as our interconnectedness and shared humanity.

In solidarity,
Cate Moss
National Human Rights Coordinator
