Each year,
September 30, marks the
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day. This important day is an opportunity for our union to come together and support indigenous peoples in the spirit of reconciliation and raise awareness about the history and legacies of the residential school system in Canada.
September 30 has been known as
Orange Shirt Day since 2013. It is named after the clothing taken from
Phyllis (Jack) Webstad when she was six years old on her first day at residential school.
The slogan
“Every Child Matter” is a plea to value and care for all children. We acknowledge this day by remembering all of those who experienced the trauma of residential schools and listening with open ears to the stories of survivors and their families. Unifor Local 2002 is committed to working for true reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples of Canada.
Members can show their solidarity and collective act of reconciliation by wearing
Orange on September 30th. Wear the colour
orange, take a photo, and share online using the hashtags #unifor2002, #unifor, and #everychildmatters. To learn more about the legacy of Residential Schools, please visit
