2023 Triennial District Representative Elections

July 20, 2023 at 4:00 PM

The Local Elections Committee would like to share the following important information concerning the upcoming Triennial District Representative elections.

50 + 1

As June 1, 2023 the bylaws have been amended at the last Triennial Convention to say that you need to have the majority of votes cast to win. For example, three (3) candidates are running for one (1) position. Previously, the candidate with the most votes won regardless of what percentage of votes they received. Now, if no candidate reached the 50% +1 of votes cast, (majority of votes), then the bottom candidate is removed and a run-off election is conducted between the top two candidates.

These are the tentative dates:

SOQS

Since the pandemic the Local has allowed Statement Of Qualifications (SOQs) for District Elections. The details will be in the writs of election.

UNITS EAST/WEST ON EB

Nomination postings for District Representative on the Executive Board for East and West, for units other than Air Canada and Jazz, will be in October with an election in November. Dates to be announced.

DECS

The role of District Election Committees (DEC) is to help the District Chair to post election notices, to encourage anyone not registered to vote and act as a resource for any member that is having voting issues. Not all districts have a DEC, but those districts that would like to have a District Election Committee need to contact their Vice President in accordance with bylaw article 4.9.06.
