February 27: Pink Shirt Day 2019

Pink Shirt Day is a day to remind us of our values and why we take up the fight for workers' rights. These rights include the right to a workplace free from harassment and bullying.

TO MOVE FORWARD, WE NEED TO KNOW WHERE WE HAVE COME FROM

Pink Shirt Day was founded by the brave actions of two teenagers from Nova Scotia who took a stand against bullying.

In 2007, David Shepherd and Travis Price passed out pink shirts to their school mates after learning of a grade 9 student who had been bullied, all because he had worn a pink shirt. With David and Travis’ efforts, the young man walked into school seeing others wearing pink and "it looked like a huge weight was lifted off his shoulders," recalls Travis.

This is what taking a stand looks like. Whether you tell someone their actions or behaviours toward another person is unacceptable or unkind, sit at a table with or talk to someone who appears to be an outcast, you can include someone in a conversation or activity that they would otherwise be excluded from; these are union values. This is why we fight the fight.

Take a stand and build a workplace that makes us all proud.

Promote kindness and inclusivity on Pink Shirt Day, and every day.
