Welcome to Getting to Know Your Local, a Unifor Local 2002 newsletter dedicated to bringing you information about our Local and our members. For the month of October, we are featuring the following three units:

Great Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA): District# 333

Our members are responsible for the day to day operations of Canada’s largest airport. Unifor represents all employees of the GTAA at Toronto Pearson International Airport (with exception of individuals that are above the rank of Assistant Managers).

The collective agreement with the GTAA covers over 200 different job classifications, listed below are few of the unionized positions that are our members are employed in: baggage system operators, electricians, engineers, clerical, mechanics, plumbers, millwrights, deicing coordinators, facility technicians, and Passenger Service Representatives.  

The GTAA is North America’s second largest international passenger airport and is a hub for the movement of people and goods across Canada, and around the world. Every year, over 465,000 flights pass through Toronto Pearson, along with 44 million passengers. In June 2018, Toronto Pearson International Airport was honored with the 2010 IATA (International Air Transport Associaton) Eagle Award for Most Improved Airport.  Our Local proudly represents over 1,200 members.

Canadian North Aircraft-Maintenance Engineers (AMEs): District #227

We represent aircraft maintenance engineers and apprentices who are employed in Edmonton, Calgary, Yellowknife, and Iqaluit. Our members ensure compliance with aircraft safety standards. Members also participate in the company’s Safety Management Systems program.  Canadian North Inc. is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, and has been serving Canada’s North with cargo, charter, and passenger services for more than 80 years. Canadian North offers scheduled flights to 18 destinations and proudly serves the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

On July 6, 2018, First Air and Canadian North signed an “agreement in principle” to merge both airlines. The merger agreement is to be finalized before the end of 2018.  Once the  merger agreement is finalized, the airline will be known as Canadian North but will operate with First Air’s new livery and Inuksuk logo, and will be headquartered in Ottawa. We currently represent over 85 members at Canadian North.

Jervis B. Webb Airport Services – Toronto: District #370:

Members work as maintenance and baggage system operators and are responsible to ensure that kilometers of baggage belts are fully operational at Pearson International Airport.

Jervis B. Webb is a global company and is headquartered in Farmington, Hills, Michigan, USA. It designs, engineers, installs and supports integrated material handling systems such as baggage handling systems, conveyor systems, Automatic Guided Vehicles. We proudly represent over 130 members at Jervis B. Webb.
