Marking the Day of National Mourning – April 28, 2022

On April 28, 2022, Unifor 2002 joins workers across Canada to commemorate those injured or killed on the job. Since first launched by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984, the National Day of Mourning is not only a day to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy, but also a day to collectively renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

Traditionally on April 28th, the Canadian flag is flown at half-mast on Parliament Hill and all federal government buildings. Employers and workers have observed the National Day of Mourning in a variety of ways over the years. Some have lit candles, laid wreaths, worn commemorative pins, ribbons, or black armbands, and paused for a moment of silence.

Whether employees are currently working remotely or onsite, employers and individuals can also show their support and commitment to a safe workplace by promoting messages to put health and safety at the forefront of their work and helping to prevent further work-related injuries and loss of life.

Pause for one minute of silence at 11:00 local time on April 28, 2022
We ask our Unifor Local 2002 membership from coast to coast to observe a moment of silence at 11:00 am local time on April 28th in memory of all Canadian workers who have died, suffered injury, or illness on the job.
