National Day of Mourning – April 28, 2020

It is an appropriate time on April 28, the National Day of Mourning to pause and reflect that too many workers have been hurt or killed on the job through injury or employment-related illness. This annual event was introduced by the labour movement and was officially recognized by the federal government in 1991. This year will mark the 36th anniversary of the National Day of Mourning.

We have seen the impact the coronavirus has had on the front-line airport, security, health care workers, and many more who continue to report to work. While the global COVID 19 crisis has changed the way we work and live, today, more than ever, we must renew our commitment to improving health and safety in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths.

In light of the global COVID-19 pandemic, this year the majority of in-person activities that would be held around the country have been canceled as we all do our part to flatten the curve by staying at home and practicing social distancing. On April 28, we ask all our members to pause at 11:00 am to observe a moment of silence.

On this day, and every day, let us remember those who have lost their lives by continuing to fight for better legislation and education for all our members.

In solidarity,

Ian Bennie
