June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day for all Unifor 2002 members to recognize and honour the unique traditions, diverse cultures, and contributions of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.  Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs.

National Indigenous Peoples Day (also referred to as National Aboriginal Solidarity day) was introduced on June 13, 1996, through a declaration by then Governor General of Canada, Roméo LeBlanc.  June 21 was chosen to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day because it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year and a time of the year that many Indigenous people have traditionally celebrated their culture and heritage.

As we celebrate this special day, it is also a time for us to deepen our understanding of the Indigenous culture, reflect on the issues faced by Indigenous communities and continue to work towards promoting reconciliation and justice for all Indigenous people.
