Morningstar Air Express Bargaining Update

Morningstar Air Express Bargaining Update

December 13, 2019 at 3:00 PM

As you know, Unifor 2002 held an important membership teleconference on October 31, 2019. The purpose of the teleconference was to provide you with the results of the data we received from the recent proposal surveys.

Your bargaining committee was pleased to see that approximately 80% of the membership submitted a survey, making the process of developing proposals for upcoming negotiations a more focused task. The committee convened on December 5 and 6 to begin this process, as well as editing existing language for the next collective agreement.

Survey data was compiled and then broken down to outline the top issues from both the narrow body jet and turboprop perspectives. Issues that had a repeating theme were prioritized based on the number of members who identified the same concerns. With the successful return rate of surveys completed, your bargaining committee unequivocally understands that significant changes are necessary in the next contract.

Considering that almost 5 years has passed since the last CBA was ratified, coupled with the considerable changes that have occurred within the aviation industry, and widespread shortage of pilots within and outside of Canada, there are more changes we need to consider for the next CBA. As such, it is taking the committee longer than expected to review the material. The committee will meet again on January 20, 21 and 22 to finalize the Union’s proposals.

Unifor is scheduled to officially open bargaining with Morningstar Air Express on Thursday, January 23, 2020 and will continue on Friday, January 24. Additional bargaining dates have already been scheduled for March 2-5 inclusive. Tentative bargaining dates are also planned for March 30 to April 3.

Earlier this week, we began discussing the potential of adding a fourth bargaining committee representative in order to cover off absences, should one of the committee representatives be unable to attend a bargaining meeting(s). We are pleased to announce that Chad Claringbold, has been appointed as a fourth member to the committee. Chad will attend all scheduled meetings effective January 20, 2020.

We will continue to provide you with updates as we work through the bargaining process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact a member of the bargaining committee.

The Morningstar Air Express collective bargaining agreement expires on March 31, 2020.
