The safe operation of Ornge’s ambulatory
and critical care services has always been a concern that affects the
Paramedics, the Pilots and the Patient(s) being transferred on board the
aircraft. Further, these operations are – and should be – a concern of the
general public as Ornge Air Ambulances operate above our homes and our places of
business.
It was announced last week that Ornge is facing 17 labour code charges with
respect to the incident that occurred on May 31, 2013 when four Ornge employees
were killed after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed just outside of
a Moosonee, Ontario. Unifor will be following the legal proceedings closely to
ensure that there is full resolution of the charges and that the employer [Ornge]
is held to the highest standards in ensuring the Health and Safety of all
affected by the services it provides.
Unifor National and Workplace representatives will continue to work
diligently to maintain and enhance the Health and Safety of our Paramedics at
Ornge. Safety is – and will always be – a paramount concern. We owe due
diligence to our brothers who lost their lives in this tragedy with hopes that
no more lives are lost.
In Solidarity,
Chuck Telky, Unifor Local 2002 Chairperson/Bargaining Representative
Ashley Watkins, Unifor Local 2002 Executive Assistant
