During Aeroplan bargaining sessions one of the proposals brought forward was the need for union education. Members expressed their desire to learn more about the CAW, their rights and the benefits of belonging to a union.
The Aeroplan bargaining committee was able to successfully bargain these union education sessions into the inaugural Aeroplan collective agreement. Subsequently, training will take place during the months of February and March with more sessions added if necessary in both the Vancouver and Montreal offices.
The “Know Your Union” workshops will include all employees who have completed their probationary period and will cover such topics as: identifying who the union officers are in each workplace, objectives of the union constitution, an outline of the union’s structure and history, the application of the collective agreement, government legislation applicable to union operations and will be followed by a question and answer period.
“Union education is one of the pillars of the CAW and this will be a tremendous benefit to our members,” said Jamie Ross, President Local 2002. “Knowledge is power.”
