The position of a full-time Air Canada National Health & Safety Coordinator is being posted as an anticipated vacancy - effective March 31, 2021. The duties, responsibilities, and desirable skill sets are as follows:
  

  • Participate actively on the Air Canada Policy Committee as the Employee Co-chair of the committee. Responsible to select your team on the committee which will include existing Health and Safety representatives from the airport and call centres.

  • Ensure a close working relationship with the Air Canada Corporate Safety Team. Verify that the Hazard Prevention Program is meeting the needs of the Regulatory body.

  • Assist in establishing Health and Safety committees. Assist/coach the Workplace Health & Safety representatives in their roles.

  • Act as a central figure to guide the H&S representatives as they participate in any right to refuse situations.

  • Administer the affairs of the Local Union which are related to safety and health issues including monitoring of legal requirements and compliances.

  • Assist with the development and delivery of related training programs on behalf of the Local. This includes one-day training courses and the initial one-week H&S training for new representatives.

  • Support in the investigation of workplace accidents, unsafe or unhealthy working conditions, and risk assessments for the Hazard Prevention Program.

  • Oversee the Local’s WCB/CSST related issues in the workplace by liaising with the organizations that we contract out our appeals of denied claims. Provide GIDIP with assistance in ensuring that any denied claims are handled. Ensure that GIDIP is paid back for any assistance they provide to members.

  • Must be active in the community and trade union movement in the area of Health and Safety. Required to attend events such as the Day of Mourning.

  • Attend National Coordinator’s meetings held by the Director of Safety and UNIFOR.

  • Develop relationships with Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers, and other Labour Oriented Resources. Cultivate relationships with Labour Canada officers across the country to facilitate communication with the regulatory body.

  • Must have a clear understanding of Part 2 of the Canada Labour Code and the COHSR.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the collective agreement process and the effect it has on the world of Health and Safety.

  • Compose/Develop bulletins for the website relating to various events in regards to Health and Safety such as RSI Day, Day of Mourning, and NAOSH week.

  • Possess good mediation, communication, and human relations skills.

  • Other responsibilities as directed by the National Unifor Health & Safety Director, President and/or the Executive Board of the Local.

  

As per 4.13.01 of the Unifor Local 2002 Bylaws, "Local 2002 Health and Safety Coordinator(s) shall be appointed by the President of the National Union, Unifor with the recommendation of the Local Union's Executive Board." The term of office will end on December 31, 2024.
