AGI Toronto Members: Closure of Operations Update – June 1, 2026

avril 9, 2026 à 12:00

Unifor leadership met with AGI management on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, to receive a formal update regarding the announced closure of operations at Toronto Pearson Airport, effective June 1, 2026.

Following the distribution of termination letters on Monday, April 6, we understand there is significant concern regarding the next steps. To provide clarity, we have outlined the current legal and contractual framework governing this transition.

Group Termination and the Canada Labour Code
Under the Canada Labour Code, a group termination occurs when an employer terminates 50 or more employees at a single workplace within four weeks. As a federally regulated workplace in the transportation sector, AGI is required to adhere to specific notification and support protocols mandated by this legislation.

Recall Rights and Contractual Protections
According to Article 10.04 of your Collective Agreement, members maintain recall rights for a minimum of three years or the length of their service, whichever is greater. These rights remain a vital protection for our membership during this period.

Severance and Outstanding Pay
Under federal law, employees with at least 12 months of consecutive service are entitled to severance pay. This is calculated as the greater of two days' wages for every completed year of service or five days' pay. Additionally, all outstanding wages, overtime, and accrued vacation pay must be paid out in full upon departure.

Ongoing Negotiations
Your Union has initiated discussions with AGI to secure an enhanced severance pay formula that exceeds the minimum legal requirements. Furthermore, we are negotiating a retention bonus for employees who remain with the company until the final day of operations. These discussions are ongoing, and we will provide specific details once an agreement is reached.

Operational Timeline
While the target closure date is June 1, operations may be extended based on airline contract requirements. AGI will communicate any specific changes to the timeline directly to affected staff.

We remain committed to supporting you throughout this process and will provide further updates as new information becomes available.
