Over the Labour Day weekend in Toronto, Ontario, more than 2,000 delegates
will gather for the first convention of Canada’s largest private sector union,
herein known as Unifor. The Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union and the
Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP) will be holding
their final conventions on Friday, August 30th, before joining together to
officially create Unifor.
In the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, there are legal
requirements regarding successor rights for the certifications of local unions.
As such, members within these provinces who are attached to employers that are
provincially regulated must vote on a special motion to continue membership with
the identified New Union.
The motion is as follows:
"Resolved that this Local Union support the
formation of a New Union and the merger of the CAW Canada with the New Union and
the continuation of this Local inside the New Union."
The Executive Board of Local 2002, along with CAW National Staff
Representative Bruce Snow are pleased to announce that CAW Local 2002 members at
CLS Catering have unanimously endorsed the continuation of their Local within
the New Union. Congratulations to everyone who participated.
