July 9, 2018 at 4:30 PM

On Friday July 6th, Makivik Corporation (parent company of First Air) and the Inuvialuit Corporate Group (parent company of Canadian North) announced that they have signed an agreement in principle to merge the two airlines. The parties stated that they expect to complete the merger by the end of 2018. Once completed, the new airline will operate under the name "Canadian North" and utilize the new First Air livery and Inukshuk logo.

According to the official press release, the airlines are merging in hopes of providing "the best possible essential air services across the Arctic."

At this juncture, members at both airlines will not see any changes to work services and/or schedules.

Unifor will update the membership once there is additional information on the rollout of the merger. In the interim, please ensure that you have subscribed to Unifor 2002's e-news service at unifor2002.org.
