Update on the Staff Reductions for GTAA Members

Update on the Staff Reductions for GTAA Members

August 14, 2020 at 6:00 PM

The bargaining committee continues to meet daily with the GTAA to deal with the staff reductions. The Voluntary Separation Package (VSP) process is now completed. There was a higher than expected number of members electing to take the VSP package, therefore there was a significant reduction in the number of members that received a layoff notice.

The members that have been impacted by the workforce reduction, have received their notice from the company. The affected members have 10 days to make their selection as indicated in their letters. For the members that elected to be placed into a vacancy or use their seniority to displace, a meeting will be scheduled with the union, employer, and the member. At the meeting, the member will be able to view a list of vacant positions including positions previously held and positions that they can displace based on their seniority and qualifications.

RECALL PERIOD EXTENSION

The GTAA/Unifor bargaining committee successfully negotiated the extension of the recall period from one year to three years. The recall extension applies to Full-time, Part-time, and Seasonal members. The extension of the recall period is a clear indication that the GTAA is committed to retaining its highly-skilled workforce.

"This positive change brings hope to our members and provides a strong possibility of returning our members to the workforce. I am extremely proud of the hard work that our bargaining committee along with our National and Local union are doing in supporting our members during these difficult times" said Antonios Kourteridis, GTAA Bargaining Chairperson.

We will keep you apprised of changes and developments as they occur. Please take care of yourself and your family. Unifor stands with you and we are going to get through this, together.

In solidarity,
