Important update to Unifor 2002 members at GardaWorld, Calgary Airport

November 28, 2023 at 12:00 PM

Dear GardaWorld members,

Last week your employer, GardaWorld, announced that they had been awarded new business contracts with the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority ("CATSA") for multiple security screening services in several regions across the country. Regrettably, GardaWorld will no longer be the service provider at Calgary International Airport. GardaWorld’s contract as the service provider at the airport will conclude March 31, 2024.

With this announcement, a new employer - Paladin Security - will be entering the Calgary Airport to provide screening services, and will become your new employer as of April 1, 2024. This new contract will be in effect for a five-year term, with two options to extend for an additional five years each time.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?

CATSA is mandated with protecting the public through effective and efficient screening of air travellers and their baggage – services you currently provide as a GardaWorld employee at Calgary Airport. Under Paladin Security, you will provide the same effective screening standards as mandated by CATSA under Transport Canada. No changes to Screening Officer duties are expected to take place. Additionally, CATSA has indicated that it does not anticipate job reductions when Paladin Security steps in as the new service provider. In fact, additional employees may be required as screening demands increase at Calgary Airport. Seniority rights are also not expected to change.

TRANSITION FROM GARDAWORLD TO PALADIN SECURITY

Unifor will be monitoring the leadup and transition of employers over to Paladin Security. GardaWorld has advised that the Paladin management team will be communicating more information to you in the coming days and weeks pertaining to the transition.

In Solidarity,

Jan Sills, Unifor Local 2002 Vice President – Western Region
Tammy Moore, President Unifor Local 2002
Nadine Bailey, Unifor National Representative
